Sharon White wins Ambassador Award

Office of Vocational Rehabilitation administrative assistant Sharon D. White was one of only six Kentucky public employees to receive an award during the 2011 Governor’s Ambassador Awards ceremony Oct. 6 in Frankfort.

White received the Leadership award from First Lady Jane Beshear for her advocacy for deaf and hard of hearing Kentuckians. As a direct result of her efforts, about 75 deaf African-American students who were denied diplomas from 1930 – 1955 at the Kentucky School for the Deaf were identified as eligible for diplomas and a graduation ceremony was held for them in August 2011 in Danville.

White, who was described in the nomination application as a dynamic leader, is president of the Kentucky Association of the Deaf, commissioner of the Kentucky Commission for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing, and secretary of the National Black Deaf Advocates Inc. She has been with the cabinet since 2002.

In addition to White, Janis Friend and Linda Irvin, both with OVR, were nominated for the Customer Service award, and Wayne Onkst with KDLA was nominated for the Leadership award.
